Introducing Half + Half

written by Justin Inahara

Hey friends!

Thanks for coming to our new food blog, Half+Half! We decided to start this blog for a few reasons—first: we have a shared love of food (duh), and second: we want to create a platform for underrepresented people to share their food stories too.  Communities of color and other minority groups are often overlooked or unnecessarily homogenized in food media and we want to help change that (like, “Oriental-Style Dressing” anyone?).

We are in search of people with familiar food stories, restaurants and businesses owned by people of color, and of course delicious food. Miko’s Filipina background and Justin’s Japanese-American upbringing has been a motivator for us to explore and retain cultural food identity. After talking with many people who grew up mixed or had first generation parents, there is a common thread of what food means to them—it means family, a piece of where they have come from. Food is a major part of culture and continues to evolve every day and we are here to celebrate that!

Half+Half is food and culture featuring people of color who are keeping culture alive through food. Yes, there will be lots of food pictures, stories, and lots of brown people. Stay mixed y’all.

Thanks, and hope you enjoy your time here!
